Technically, it depends on which sorta story you want. If you want a really spine-chilling one, try writing a ghost story. In reality, I doubt there are many successful 'Horror' novels. I've never heard of any. Dracula, Frakenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, along with pretty much all the more famous monsters, are actually classed as the 'Gothic' genre. ... Oh, and I'd recommend NOT using a vampire or something equally recognised. People will think you're copying other stories. Overall, the best thing to do, if you're seriously considering writing, is read Gothic and Ghost stories. It'll help you identify what makes a scary atmosphere.

Wow... Even trying to write something scary creeps me out. I get frightened very easily. But, when I do want to write something horrifying, I pictire it in my head first. Yeah, then I just write the details I have seen in my mind--the place, the lighting, the smells, sights, feelings, the char's emotions about it all, there thoughts and add even a little bit of actual facts you want to the reader to know. Oh, and, of course, it's much better if the reader doesn't know what the "thing" is for a little bit. BUT... If you do that, make sure you've actually picked something scary. Otherwise, when it shows up, it'll be a disappointment. XD

Heh, Goosebumps - I read those as a kid. Loved 'em. And nice to see you think I'm good at scary descriptions. I like scary things. I'm called Haunter 360 for a reason afterall... Anyhow, that book sounds pretty darn scary. ONE site though, possessing REALLY good scary stories is a sorta parody site, since the monster in question ain't that scary. Search 'Quacker and Bowen tails from the crypt'. You'll never see the Tails Doll the same way again...

I'll have to do some searching. I'm going to buy Resident Evil 4 today so I'll look in the book shop near to it. Also I've that the kind of stuff you're describing ("it's much better if the reader doesn't know what the "thing" is for a little bit" and "If you want a really spine-chilling one, try writing a ghost story.") pretty much matchs the storyline of the Grudge (an excellant Japenese horror movie, which is very scary but manages to do so with next to no gore).
