There's a theory that every season of the horror show American Horror Story represents a circle of hell. Well I had an idea, what about horror games? What horror games would represent each of the nine circles of hell based on Dante's Inferno. (Obviously Dante's Inferno doesn't count) and this is what I came up with.
I don't have all of them and I'm not all that show if all of them fit so if you want to suggest something else go ahead.
Limbo - Five Nights At Freddys
The obvious comparison being the children, Limbo is filled with the souls of unbaptised children and much like Limbo and Murder House all of the victims of Purple Man are trapped within Freddy Fazbear's pizzaria, it's also the only horror game that forces you to stay in place.
Lust -
Gluttony - Resident Evil
This one is kind of a stretch so if anyone has anything better feel free to suggest something better but Gluttony represents all those who overindulged in life, Umbrella caused the Raccoon incident by overindulging. The series also does seem to show overindlugence with the posh Spencer Mansion and Salazar's castle and characters are often forced to walk through a sludge which could be seen to represent the sludge all in the third cycle of hell are forced to walk through.
Greed - Dead Space
Greed is easy, here people are punished by being forced to push bolders representing the wealth they hoarded and spent, Dead Space has multiply examples of greed from EarthGov's overspending forcing the Earth into an energy crisis to the cult Unitology stealing what little wealth people have by promising them answers about the universe.
Wrath -
Heresy - Silent Hill
Violence - Doom
Fraud - Prey
Prey is filled to the brim with examples of Fraud from Alex and Morgan Yu's family covering up the nature of what goes on at TranStar and Neuromods to multiply characters lying about who they are and a fake rescue mission which turns out to be a murder squad to cover up all of TranStar's crimes but the best example of this is the Typhoon themselves, who could be seen as the Geryon a flying monster with different natures. Creatures that disguise themselves to sneak up and kill their prey.
Treachery - Bioshock
I'm not sure if this counts as horror but Bioshock like the ninth circle of hell has the worst people of all the games so far. There's Atlas who uses you to kill Andrew Ryan, who himself becomes paranoid with the idea of being betrayed by those around him, the ninth circle is a structure of ice with the worst at the bottom. Bioshock is a game at it's core about betrayal.
