With Sun/Moon approaching this November... I've actually gotten back into playing my Pokemon Y to ready myself for transferring all the awesome shiny brawlers from the Kalos region, along with all my other previously owned victorious mons I've kept over the years.
That said, I've gotten back into creating the best possible Pokemon I can through breeding - getting 5-6IVS, super training for best EVs, best movesets combined with Egg Moves and tutoring, Hidden Abilities, giving appropriate Items, and last but not least that SHINY color!
I've actually gotten my pals Ray and Caleb into playing Pokemon - for Ray it's back into his Pokemon X version, and for Caleb he's just started his Pokemon adventure/addiction in Y version - and through them I'm experiencing the hype all over again while looking forward to the next game. Like some of you, they've asked me now about their fav mons and how to make them 'the best possible' from a competitive perspective.
Which reminded me of this awesome thread. :3
SO... You, like me, may want to ready yourself for the next generation. I'll be trying to complete Blaze's list - sorry it is long long long overdue - and then answer any other questions/give advice in future posts.
I may even do little discussions on some of my own Pokemon here and there in the future just to give you guys an inside look.

As promised, I'll touch up on Blaze's/Naraku's list. And I'm quoting and bringing what I had previously here to the table for less window opening - because there will be when I'm researching! I've shown you my 'ultimate team' so far. However, i'd be interested in seeing your take on them. Hydreigon - Panzer Bisharp(Shiny) - Myriel Tyranitar(Shiny or not) - Tzar - Possibly Mega Greninja(Male, Shiny) - Kirito (Deffo thinking Protean on this guy) Zoroark(Female, Shiny or not) - Sinali My sixth is a choice between Houndoom - Baskerville - Not mega (Its ability sucks to my mind unless teamed up with a sun bringer like groudon) - Flashfire Shiftry - Naruto Crawdaunt - Cancer Absol - Chill (Possibly mega due to magic bounce, but super luck for increased critical is cool) I really neglected Blazey, I'm sorry! XD Let's start with the first set above, then focus on the sixth slot mons. :3 Profiles written below for Pokemon X Version. - Naraku's Ultimate Team - Detailed Pokemon Profiles Name: Hydreigon - Panzer Gender: Male/Female Type: Dark/Dragon Ability: Levitate (Immune to Ground-type moves) Recommended Item: Choice Scarf - When this item is being held, the user's Speed is increased by 50%, but the Pokémon is limited to using the first attack it uses until it is withdrawn from battle. Suggested Nature(s): Modest (+Sp.Attk, -Attk) or Timid (+Speed, -Attk) Recommended 5IVs: Outstanding Potential in HP, Def, Sp.Attk, Sp.Def, and Speed. Recommended EVs: 4 HP/ 252 SpAttk/ 252 Speed Recommended Moveset(s) for Hydreigon: - Draco Meteor / Dragon Pulse - Fire Blast / Flamethrower - Dark Pulse / Earth Power - Charge Beam / Surf
^Research Notes: With so many physical set Dragons now roaming the land of Pokemon... Luckily we have the special attack Hydreigon to help balance!
(After a closer look, Hydreigon is actually best as a Sp.Attk fighter, and having a Nature suited for Attk is really quite dismissing. So I give you just the Modest/Timid Hydreigon set!)
Hydreigon is easy when deciding his Ability because... Well, he has no other abilities. But Levitate is great all by itself, so no worries about pesky Earthquake sweepers when you switch in to Hydreigon to save a teammate!
Onto the moveset! Draco Meteor is a beast move for a Sp.Attk Dragon-type that gives the best STAB. Only problem is that it will HARSHLY reduce your much needed Sp.Attk stat in battle. Great thing if you use him in competitive battling is that you find yourself switching a lot more, there-go returning your stats to normal, and I half expect you will be doing more switching to protect your Hydreigon if you are mostly using a Dark-based team. If you don't want to worry about losing Sp.Attk at all, then always go with Dragon Pulse instead. Did I mention I love Dragon Pulse? XD
What's a dragon without fire? Fire Blast is wonderful for coverage! It removes threats like Bug-types and Ice-types, which Hydreigon is very much weak to. It also is handy against walling Steel-types, or Grass-types that just get in your way. Say goodbye to annoying Mega Scizor! You can always run with Flamethrower for more accuracy, which may be more of what you need if you run into threats.
Dark Pulse is the obvious best STAB in the Sp.Attk Dark-type moves. It also has the nice chance of causing your opponents to flinch, which can prove useful. Now I bet you are wondering WHY I even listed Earth Power above. Well, reason I presented it was because I learned that Hydreigon can learn Earth Power as an Egg Move. How curious! It's a great Ground-type Sp.Attk that could be veeeeeery surprising to your enemy. But I would still go with Dark Pulse for the pure STAB, since Earth Power's purpose can be settled with Fire Blast/Flamethrower with handling Steel, and Electric-types or Rock-types won't do well anyway since Hydreigon is a solid Dragon(no Flying) and makes that not very effective. Anyway! Just something interesting to note. :3 (I ramble...)
Charge Beam or Surf. These are awesome coverage moves that can help your Dark-based team against a variety of enemies. I reeeeeeally wanted Hydreigon to have a higher Sp.Attk Electric move, but he does not learn anything else. But that's not to spat upon Charge Beam, nooooo, because it has that nifty ability to potentially raise your Sp.Attk after each use. BAM! Handle all the other Flying and Water Pokemon easily while boosting your power! And Surf is great, I'm sure I don't have to tell you. That takes care of Ground, Fire, and Rock types that threaten your other teammates.
So you have great choices here. You could even run with the Fire, Electric and Water attacks instead of using either a Dragon move or Dark move to have full coverage, but STABS are still nice if your other teammates take the role of coverage. Ta-daaaa. :3
Move details!
Draco Meteor - By move tutor, special move, 130 power, 90% accuracy, recoil harshly that lowers the user's Sp.Attk stat each use. Dragon Pulse - By Lvling to lvl32, special move, 85 power, 100% accuracy.
Fire Blast - By TM, special move, 110 power, 85% accuracy, has 30% chance to leave target burned. Flamethrower - By TM, special move, 90 power, 100% accuracy, has 10% chance to leave target with a burn.
Dark Pulse - By TM or Egg Move, special move, 80 power, 100% accuracy, has a 20% chance to make your target flinch. Earth Power - Egg Move, special move, 90 power, 100% accuracy, has a 10% chance to lower target's Sp.Def by one stage.
Charge Beam - By TM, special move, 50 power, 90% accuracy, the user has a 70% chance of raising its Sp.Attk stat by one stage. Surf - By HM, special move, 90 power, 100% accuracy, hits all Pokemon in the area in Double and Triple battles, and of course... You can Surf. XD
Name: Bisharp - Myriel... SHINY!Gender: Male/Female Type: Dark/Steel Ability: Defiant (Boosts Attk stat by two stages for every stat drop!) Recommended Item: There is actually so many different item choices you could go with, so let me present each of them in a neat and clean order. + Life Orb - Boosts power by 30% but makes the holder take 10% recoil each turn it attacks. + Black Glasses - Raises power of Dark-type moves by 20%. + Lum Berry - Cures status. One-time use. + Focus Sash - If it has full HP, the holder will endure one potential KO attack, leaving 1 HP. Suggested Nature(s): Adamant (+Attk, -Sp.Attk) Recommended 5IVs: Outstanding Potential in HP, Attk, Def, Sp.Def, and Speed. Recommended EVs: 252 Attk / 4 Def / 252 Speed Recommended Moveset(s) for Bisharp:- Knock Off / Protect - Swords Dance - Iron Head - Sucker Punch ^Research Notes:I am truly ecstatic that you want a Bisharp on your team! Why? Because I have one on mine as well! Right... Onto the notes! Let's first talk about this Knock Off approach taken directly from Smogon. Knock Off is Bisharp's main STAB move, as it hits incredibly hard and has utility in removing items. In competitive play or online gaming against rivals, if your opponent knows anything... Then their Pokemon will be holding items to help them beneficially in battle, and that gives Knock Off the extra oomph it needs while leaving your foes empty handed. Pretty nifty, yeah? This is your best choice move if you run with either Life Orb, Black glasses, or Lum Berry yourself. But let's not forget about the other options! Protect is a life saver, especially if you ever 2Vs2 battle with your Pokemon. Even if you don't 2Vs2 battle much, Protect can save your skin when you don't know what to expect from an opponent. Bisharp has a 4x weakness to Fighting-type moves, and there are many Pokemon that can learn such moves that might surprise you! To counter the unexpected, or to save yourself from wide-spread moves from an ally Pokemon, using Protect is great! My own Bisharp has Protect. I also personally use Focus Sash instead as my held item, giving me a free Swords Dance boost and surviving by 1hp to suddenly give a quick and harsh Sucker Punch that the enemy doesn't expect! Using Protect and having the Focus Sash can lead to great strategies...and fun mind games! >:] Which leads us into Swords Dance! Swords Dance boosts the user's Attack by two stages! Not one, but TWO stages ladies and gents! This makes Bisharp a fierce early- or mid-game sweeper after his checks are out of the way, and his swinging punches can lead to 1HKO's left and right on anything that isn't too bulky or resists him. I'll be sure to leave notes from Smogon directly on what to check and counter for below! Sucker Punch. This move. This move right here makes up for Bisharp's speed. When used correctly, or strategically, or if you're just plain lucky enough... Maybe even just SNEAKY... This move comes through! Priority +1. Will only work if the foe chose a damaging move and moves after the user. Plus STAB with being a Dark-type move. With Swords Dance under your belt, and your opponent unsuspecting or left with no other choice but to head-on battle you, Sucker Punch will take out plenty of the enemy team or revenge kill those that opposed you! Iron Head is last but not least! Iron Head has a 30% chance of causing the target to flinch, and it is the best STAB Steel-type move that Bisharp can learn. It is nothing to sneer at with packing a mean punch!...or headache? Yeah. To make things better with this move, it is a physical attack that suites Bisharp best and has 100% accuracy. Good stuff here! Did I forget to mention that Iron Head is GREAT against those annoying Fairy-types that like to get in your way? Fear not, Bisharp! Just use your head! Now to take a closer look at the moves in detail. Knock Off - By Move Tutor, Dark-type move, Physical Attack, 65BP(Base Power), 100% accuracy, Power is boosted 1.5x if target is holding a removable item. Removes the the target's item. Protect - By TM, Normal-type move, Non-Damaging move, Prevents any attacks targeted at the user from striking on that turn. Its accuracy drops to 50% if used consecutively after itself, Detect, Endure, Quick Guard or Wide Guard. Swords Dance - By lvl63 or TM, Normal-type move, Non-Damaging move, Boosts the user's Attack by TWO stages. Sucker Punch - By Egg Move, Dark-type move, Physical Attack, 80BP, 100% accuracy, Priority +1. Will only work if the foe chose a damaging move and moves after the user. Iron Head - By lvl57 or Move Tutor, Steel-type move, Physical Attack, 80BP, 100% accuracy, 30% chance of causing the target to flinch. As promised, I'll include in the spoilers below for this section all Bisharp's checks and counters from Smogon! Happy reading and planning your strategy! That's all for Bisharp! More coming soon...

Since it's the 20th Anniversary of Pokemon... There's even more reasons for research!
With Sun/Moon approaching, and the Pokemon versions Red/Blue/Yellow re-released for download for 3DS, the Pokebank function will be allowing the first generation mons to be transferred from Red/Blue/Yellow to the new upcoming Sun/Moon. Why is this important?
This brings me to my post.
In Gen 1 of Pokemon, the original 151 monsters knew or could learn certain moves, with a lot of these moves updated and/or removed from their move lists for future Gen games with newly added Pokemon to make room for. But now...
The Pokebank will be allowing these Gen 1 mons to pass through the Pokebank into Sun/Moon directly... All with their once previously known moves that otherwise would have been flagged.
In other words, competitive play just got shaken up a little! Maybe even by a LOT. And that's why I'm personally looking into some research with a closer look at our old 151 mon friends to see what may lie in store for us. Especially since I invested in downloading my first Pokemon game back onto my 3DS - Pokemon Red!
I'll see if there's anything interesting or worth mentioning. For now, a video!
