I use Rob with the Rob-LGS, here's a few results that I have

Kart i use for time trails are karts with high item rating as they will give you 3 shrooms at the start, plus i pratice with the staff ghosts on so i know when to snake and power boost...

The karts make no major difference, other than anything with high items

actually i used to us Yoshi with the cucumber, and i traded records wih Stirby and he was using Rob. His time thrashed me easily cos his kart was better than mine.
