What is the definition of trepanning?:
Trepanning - ancient procedure when holes were cut in an ill person's head to let evil spirits out.
* Greeks were the 1st to explain Abnormal Behavior via "Biological Process"(Hippocrates) believed mental illness caused by a misplace in "Humors"(phlegm, black/yellow Bile).
Name 2 Models and their subparts:
1). Biological Model: model explaining behavior as caused by biological changes in the chrmical, structural, or genetic systems of the body.
2). Psychological Model: any pattern of behavior that causes people significant distress, causes them tp harm others, or harms their ability to function in daily life.
Psychoanalysis(Hiding Problems) - disordered behavior as a result of repressing, or hiding, one's threatening thoughts, memories and concerns in the unconscious mind. The repressed thoughts and urges try to resurface and disordered behavior develops as a way of keeping the thoughts repressed.
Behaviorism(Learning Problems) - personality as a set of learned responses/reactions. Ex. child conditioned to become afraid of a spider after an experience or two.
Cognitive Perspective(Thinking Problems) - the way people think, remember and mentally organize info, but resulting in abnormal behavior or illogical thinking patterns. Ex. irrational thoughts about an animal bite, usually beliving death is a result.
What is the DSM-IV-TR?:
DSM-IV-TR: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Version IV, Text Revision. Manual of psychological disorders and their symptoms - 250 types of psychologial disorders--described by symptoms, path taken, progress(pathology).
List and describe the Disorder AXIS Levels:
AXIS I - Clinical Disorders(Major Impairing Disorders).
AXIS II - Either Personality Disorder or Mental Retardation
AXIS III - General Medical Conditions
AXIS IV - Psychosocial Land Environmental Issues
AXIS V - Global A-ssessments of Functioning.
Name the Disorder Categories and what they possess:
1). Anxiety:
Anxiety Disorders - disorders in which the main symptom is excessive or unrealistic anxiety and fearfulness.
General Anxiety Disorder(GAD) - disorder in which a person has feelings of dread and doom along with physical symptoms of stress, which lasts six months or more.
Obessessive-Compulsive Disorder(OCD) - disorder in which intruding, recurring thoughts or obessions create anxiety that is relieved by performing a repetitive, ritualistic behavior(compulsion).
Panic Disorder - disorder in which panic attacks occur frequently enough to the case that the person has difficulty in adjusting to daily life.
Agoraphobia - fear of crowds, public places.
2). Somatoform Disorders:
Psychosomatic Disorder - disorder in which psychological stress causes a real physical disorder or illness.
Psychophysical Logical Disorder - modern term for psychomatic disorder.
3). Dissociative Disorders:
Dissociative Disorders - disorders in which there is a break in conscious awareness, memory, the sense of identity or some combination.
Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID) - disorder occurring when a person seems to have two or more distinct personality within one body.
Psychoanalytic - explanation point repression of memories, seeing dissociation as a defense mechanism against anxiety.
4). Mood Disorders:
Mood Disorders - disorders in which mood is severely disturbed.
Bipolar Disorder (2 poles) - severe mood swings between major depressive episodes and maniac episodes.
Major Depression(MDD) - severe depression that comes on suddenly and seems to have no external cause.
Maniac (Euphoria) - having the equality of excessive excitement, energy and elation or irritability.
5). Schizophrenia:
Schizophrenia - severe disorder in which the person suffers from disordered thinking, bizarre behavior, hallucinations and is unable distinguish between fantasy and reality.
Psychotic - the break away from an ability to perceive what is real and what is fantasy.
Delusions - false beliefs held by a person who refuses toaccept evidence of their falseness.
Hallucinations - false sensory perceptions, such as hearing voices that do not really exist.
What are the 3 types of Schizophrenia?:
1). Disorganized - type of schizophrenia in which behavior is bizarre and childish and thinking, speech and motor actions are very disordered.
2). Catatonic - type of schizophrenia in which the person experiences periods of statue-like immobility mixed with occasional bursts of energetic, frantic movement and talking.
3). Paranoid - type of schizophrenia in which the person suffers from delusions of persecution, granduer and jealousy, together with hallucinations.
