(Oops! Sorry for not posting for a while...
Anyhow, this post is small, but it should be good, hopefully!)
-----------
Diek gave a look of dismay. “Well, this is a problem…” He and Gelu were both lying flat on their chests, from the top of a hill, looking down upon the imprisonment walls of Hilen. The cold, cruel, storm cloud-grey stone walls which prevented any slave making a break for freedom in the almost-fabled kingdom of Adalat. The boy turned to look at Gelu. “How can we possibly get past them?” Gelu’s face was determined. “We must. The kingdom of Adalat is where the prophecy originated, and I have a feeling that at least one person there, will be destined to aid us in our quest.” Diek bit his lip. The stone wall was high and steep, impossible to climb, and patrolled by guards in their hundreds, they themselves armed with crossbows and large clubs. They’d be spotted as soon as they started down the hill, and picked off almost immediately. Getting past looked an impossible task. However, little did he know, that Gelu was impossible enough to think of a plan, somewhat quickly. Gelu pointed, not to anything on the wall, but to an old mine nearby. “Over there. I sense that we must go through it. In it, you will face your first challenge.” Diek gulped. “Ch-challenge? R-right… Um, but isn’t the mine a little… Close to the wall? Won’t we be spotted?” Gelu gave a smirk. “They will not see us. I shall ensure that. Now, run to the mine when I tell you to.”
Before Diek could wonder, Gelu’s hand began to glow blue. The young man closed his eyes and clenched his fist, and the glow intensified. Suddenly, overheard, the dark clouds rumbled and a flash of lightning crackled across the sky… But for the first time in Diek’s life, it was not a flash of purple energy, striking the hearts of all slaves with fear, but instead, it was a flash of pure, sapphire blue energy, like that of Gelu’s eyes. Then, quite unexpectedly, and for the first time in so many years, water droplets began coming down from the above.
Diek’s eyes widened. Was it possible? Could it be? Yes! It was… Rain! Nothing more than a memory of the happier past during his lifetime, yet here it was, quenching the thirst of the parched, dry, dusty landscape, with a shower of pure, cool, refreshing water, which soon became a downpour. Ancient, forgotten streams, dried for so long, were once again brought back by the life-giving water, and flowed once more, in joyous trickling.
The slaves in their camp, though stunned for a while, soon began collecting the precious water in jars, pots and bowls, giggling and laughing with delight and hope.
To Diek’s bewilderment (And amusement) the guards retreated into their quarters… In a sort of panic. Awestruck, Diek turned to Gelu, who was wearing a wide smile. The mysterious man then chuckled a little. “Your captors are of the borogo, hailing from the Acridulous wastes. A proud race, who take pleasure in enslaving other races, and in admiring themselves. However, because of their well-groomed thick, dark pelts, they hate getting wet… It makes them look ‘ugly’.” Diek almost scoffed. They always seemed to look hideous! Gelu then nodded. “You must now take this opportunity to enter the mines. I have briefly broken the grip that the tyrant has on this land. However, this is only brief, so we’d better get moving. Now, GO!” Scrambling to his feet, Diek ran for the abandoned mine, hope in heart, after seeing Hilen come to life, one last time…

Hey, awesome. ^_^ Lol, I like Gelu. He may be like a crazy old man, but he has spark to him as well. Someone you can count on! :]
I think Diek is gonna be just fine with Gelu on his side. Sure, there will most likely be rough times, but in the end..there is light! ^_^
I love it. It's..so different. I mean, it's a story you really can't predict. :] Very well constructed, Haunter. Continue when you wish. ^_^

(Woah! I haven't posted for like... Ages...
Here's an update for you FM5 and Blaze!)
-----------
Creeping into the mines, Diek felt the hairs on the back of his neck rising. The mines comprised of black rock, held up by uncomfortably thin wooden supports. He had heard how often mines collapsed, killing dozens of slaves, and upon seeing what held them up, he wasn’t surprised. And seeing as this particular mine had been abandoned for so long, the supports would be even more fragile than usual… He had to be careful. However, it wasn’t the obvious peril of the caves which sent a shiver down his spine. It was the familiarity… He felt like he was back in the forbidden tunnels, all over again. Swallowing back a lump he felt rising in his throat, he turned to Gelu, who was behind him. “So, do we go deeper?” Gelu nodded. “Your challenge, and the path to Adalat, is through this tunnel.” Grimly, Diek nodded, and the two of them began down the dark, dank, dismal mines, all the while the boy thinking about the… Challenge.
Diek shuddered as another droplet of rank mine water dropped on the back of his neck. The abandoned mine was unpleasant, in every possible way. Unlike the other mines and tunnel of Hilen it was damp, dank, and musty. More often than not, Diek ended up slipping, and falling into soggy dust, or as Gelu called it, MUD. The stuff stuck to Diek’s skin, its cold and moist touch slithering all over, chilling him to numbness. “Why is this place so c-cold?” He asked, shivering. The messenger turned to the boy. “No one has been here for a decade. No body heat, no fires, and no sun above, means that this place is perhaps one of the coldest in Hilen.” Diek nodded slowly, before shuddering as he accidentally stepped in another mud puddle. As he shook his bare foot, trying to get the unpleasant mess out from in-between his toes, he noticed something on the tunnel wall. Turning to look at it, he swallowed. “G-Gelu…?” The man turned, and paused. “Slavery is a terrible thing…” There, on the cave wall, was a massive splash of deep red… Blood. A stain from the past. Diek stared at it for a moment, thoughtfully. Whose blood had it been? Why, or how, had they died? How had their family responded, upon learning of their loved one’s death? Was that person destined to be so easily forgotten? Gelu waited, then gestured to Diek. “Come, we must move. I do not trust these tunnels entirely… We do not know what lurks within them.” Then he pointed ahead, and nodded. “Do you see that?” Diek squinted to see in the gloom, which he still had not entirely grown accustomed to. “I think… I think that there’s a split in the road ahead… Yes, there is.” Then he turned, giving Gelu a concerned look. “Which way do we turn?” Gelu folded his arms, and closed his eyes, as he thought. “… Both lead to the way out of the mines.” Diek paused, as he waited for the royal messenger to continue. Seeing as he was getting nothing else, he gave the man a puzzled look. “So… Which way do we take?” In reply though, the man shook his head. “WE do not take a path. You and I both have different paths to take. You must choose your path first, and I shall take the other path.” Diek thought about this. “So… I choose my path, right?” Gelu nodded. The boy paused again, as he thought again. “This has something to do with that challenge you mentioned, doesn’t it? The path I take, it leads to the challenge, doesn’t it?” His temporary guardian nodded once more, remaining silent. Diek turned, looked at the split, sighed, and thought. Left… Or right? Which way would he take? He frowned as he thought. He had always hated decision-making. Left or right? Left or right? He his head, and then, biting his lip, walked onward… And headed down the right path.
Smiling warmly, Gelu watched the boy, as he disappeared into the tunnel. He had chosen the correct one.

(A trial of destiny. He was destined to choose that tunnel. Gelu knew which one he'd choose, having forseen it, but he still asked... As he was meant to ask. ... This part is destiny stuff)
