Chapter 10 - Carl gets worried....

Carl, Katy and Amy walked through what seemed to be an endless amount of corridors until they reached a large room. Carl grabbed the handle and held the door open for the girls. Katy stopped just inside the doorway and gasped. Carl looked around the door and gasped too.
Inside were all the Freedom Fighters sat around a large group of tables and all of them let out a cheer as soon as they saw Carl and Katy. Above all the tables was a banner which read “Welcome Heroes” on it.
“Uh…Amy…. Did you know about this?”
Amy smiled “Yeah, Sonic and Shadow told me not to tell you.”
“It’s ok Amy” Katy said. “It’s a nice surprise.”
“I’m glad you like it Katy.” Came a voice from behind them. They all turned around. It was Tails. Carl immediately held out his hand and Tails shook it firmly.
Carl smiled. “I can’t thank you enough for my games trainer system.”
“It’s no problem. It was developed in my workshop, which reminds me, I need to borrow you as soon as you get a chance, I have something to give you.”
Katy looked at Carl. “How cool is this? You get all this stuff to help. Do I get anything?”
“It would be unfair if we didn’t.” Came Sonics’ voice. “Don’t forget Katy, you are helping us too.”
Katy looked at Sonic and then gave him a high five.
“I think we are ready to begin now Sonic.” Tails said to him
“OK little buddy.” Sonic said. “You guys follow me.”
Sonic led them through all the tables where various Freedom Fighters they had met with shook their hands as they passed.
“OK, you guys are sitting up here.” Sonic pointed to two chairs next to each other at the table up the far end of the room.
Carl took one seat and Katy took the other.
Sonic stood at the podium next to Carls’ chair.
“Fellow Freedom Fighters.” Sonic started and the room quietened. “By now if you haven’t already guessed we have two new additions to our team. I want you all to met our latest Freedom Fighters CARL AND KATY!”
The room went into uproar as all the Freedom Fighters cheered as Sonic said their names.
“Now here is the plan, after breakfast we will split into two teams, one team trains one of these guys, and the other team takes the other. After a certain a couple of days we will switch the teams and train the other member until they know everything that we do. Now lets all enjoy our breakfast, and then we shall start by giving Katy her Battle Suit.”
The room exploded with sound once again and Carl put his hands over his ears, as the sound was too loud… amazing how so few people could make such a loud noise.

All the Freedom Fighters started eating their breakfast but Carl wasn’t eating anything.
“Carl…” Katy said. “You OK?”
“Huh?” Carl looked at her. “Yeah, I’m OK. I was just thinking.”
“About what?” Katy said.
“It’s nothing.” Carl smiled. “Don’t worry about it.”
Carl then picked up his fork and started eating his breakfast.
“OK…” Katy carried on with hers.

Afterwards Katy went off with Sonic and Shadow to get her Battle Suit while Tails organised everyone into a line.
“OK everybody, one person at a time. Those who want to train Carl move to the left of the room, and those who want to train Katy, move to the right.”
“Wait Tails.” Carl said. “It would be better if Katy and I chose who would train us.”
“OK Carl.” Tails said before addressing the Freedom Fighters again. “OK guys, you heard Carl, get into your training groups and we will let Carl and Katy decide when Katy gets back.”
The Freedom Fighters arranged themselves into various groups. Carl looked around and could already see obvious groups. Knuckles and Rouge stood together. Carl assumed that they were power. Tails stood next to a robotic version of himself. Flight. And then there was one other group, who Carl didn’t know at all.
One of them was a fire-red female hedgehog…but she didn’t look the same as Sonic or Shadow. She had small black wing-like projections coming from either side of her head. She was wearing a Battle Suit similar to Carl’s except hers was black and had white circuitry lines zigzagging across it. Just under her long red hair Carl saw that she had deep looking purple eyes that seemed to never end. In a pocket of her Battle Suit were two Sai blades, one on each side. Her hands were constantly over them and she hadn’t moved them since Carl had noticed her. Something about her made Carl not want to face her in a fight… It may be one he lost, or quite possibly be his last.
Next to her was a dark blue hedgehog wearing a lighter blue Battle Suit than his fur. He looked extremely dynamic and his spines seemed more impressive due to the silvery circuit lines running along his Suit. Some of the lines seemed to be like lightning, and looked like it when the energy pulses ran through the lines.
“Hey, Tails…who are they?” Carl enquired.
“Oh, they are Spyke and Natasha. They are our newest members, except for you of course. C’mon I’ll introduce you.” Tails smiled before walking ahead of Carl.
After a few seconds talking to the pair Tails signalled Carl to come forward.
“Carl I want you to meet Spyke and Natasha.” Carl shook hands with the pair of them before Tails walked off to leave Carl to get better aquainted.
“So, you are the one who is going to help us defeat Eggman, huh?” Spyke said.
“That’s right.” Carl said.
“Great” Natasha said. “The more people we get to help the better!” And she smiled.
Carl returned the smile as Sonic, Shadow and Katy re-entered the room.
Katy’s battle suit was blue too, but hers had red circuit lines on it.
“Oh, wow!” Carl said. “That looks so cool!”
“I know, it’s awesome!” Katy smiled broadly “And look at this!” Katy pushed a button and a long green visor covered both of her eyes and she completely disappeared.
“Where the?” Carl looked around… Katy was nowhere to be seen. Then all of a sudden Carl felt a slight breeze around his neck. Carl turned around… nothing.
“Katy?” Carl said.
“You got me” came Katy’s voice from thin air, and she reappeared. “I have stealth!”
“Woah… cool!” Carl was amazed. Katy’s Battle Suit was incredible!
“Don’t worry Carl” Tails said. “We haven’t updated yours yet… I spent most of last night reconfiguring everything for Katy’s suit. So I’ll need to get you in my workshop to have yours updated later OK?”
“No problem Tails.” Carl said, still awed at Katy’s suit.
“Hey, Tails. Why haven’t we got into two teams?” Sonic asked.
“Well, Carl thought it would be a good idea if we let Katy and him choose who they will be working with.” Tails explained.
Sonic looked at Carl.
“Well if we want to be trained, we might as well pick who we want to train us.”
Carl smiled.
“Nice idea Carl. Using your initiative is another thing you need if you are going to be a successful Freedom Fighter. So who picks first?”
Carl looked at Katy.
“Ladies first.” Carl said.
“Um…OK. I’m sorry if I just point you out…I don’t know many of you.”
“That’s alright Katy. This is one way to get to know all of us.” Sonic said. “Just point them out and I’ll tell you their name. Just one thing though, you have to pick me or Shadow first.”
“I pick you then Sonic. Is that OK with you Carl?”
“Fine by me!” Carl said. “As long as I get trained, I don’t mind!”
“Great, OK now it’s either Tails or his robo-clone for the next set.”
“Um…. I pick the robo-clone” Katy said.
The robo-clone stood behind Katy.
“That gives me Tails then.” Carl smiled and high-fived Tails as he walked past.
“Right then, now you have to pick between Knuckles and Rouge for power training.”
“I pick Knuckles.” Katy said.
Knuckles joined Katy’s group and Rouge stood behind Carl and Tails.
“And finally we have our new group, Spyke and Natasha.” Sonic said.
“I pick…” Katy began.
“Wait…” Carl said. “Why don’t we let them choose who they want to go with… After all, they are new just like us.”
“Another excellent idea Carl…You will make a fantastic Freedom Fighter.”
“Alright then…” Natasha said, “I pick Carl.”
“That leaves you and me Katy” Spyke said and shook Katy’s hand as he walked past.
“Alright then, we now have our teams, I want Carl’s team in VR 1 in ten minutes, and Katy’s team in VR 2. Until then you can explore, but make sure you get to the VR Room on time.”
“OK Sonic.” Katy said. “Hey Carl, wanna go exploring together?”
“No thanks Katy, I think I’m gonna go look around on my own if that’s ok?”
“Sure. I don’t mind.” Katy smiled.
“OK, I’ll meet you…. Um…sometime.” Carl scratched the back of his head. “I don’t know when…” He laughed nervously.
“OK then.” Katy hugged Carl before setting off through the door.
“Carl.” Shadow spoke. “Why did you not want to go with Katy?”
“Hmm?” Carl looked straight at Shadow. “Well, I think that it would be best if we explored the complex at our own paces without one slowing or speeding the other one up.” Carl smiled weakly.
“I see.” Shadow nodded. “A wise choice”
“Alright then, I’ll see you in VR 1 in a little while” And with that Carl left the room.

Carl wandered around the many corridors for about 5 minutes before entering another large room with light filtering down from the skylight, unaware that his every move was being watched.
“I don’t understand why everyone sees him as a threat. He’s still only a kid.” The figure spoke quietly. It was a female echidna with sharp blades in a large hilt on her back. She continued to watch Carls’ movements through the skylight.
Carl walked up and down the room getting faster and faster until he was a blue blur charging up and down the room.
“Having fun?” A voice came from the doorway.
Carl screeched to a halt just in front of Natasha who had followed him.
“Natasha… you scared me.” Carl clutched his chest “What is it?”
“Nothing, I thought we could have a little talk, ya know… Freedom Fighter to Freedom Fighter.”
“Sure…” Carl smiled, but Natasha didn’t smile back.
“Carl, is there something troubling you?” Natasha asked him as they sat down on the floor.
“No… why do you ask?” Carl tried to hide it, but he knew his game was up.
“Alright, let me put this another way, what is troubling you?” Natasha put her hand on his.
“OK, but you can’t tell anyone.” Carl said with his head in his hands. Natasha nodded to him.
“Alright. I promise” and she put a hand on her heart and one in the air. “Freedom Fighters honour.”
“OK… Have you ever had so many people depend on you, but you are so afraid that you will fail and let everyone down?”
Natasha stayed silent as Carl continued
“Well, everyone here is counting on me because I have some information that can help… The only problem is… not even I know what that information is… what if this all turns out wrong and I can’t help… Then all of this will have been a waste of everybody’s time.”
“It’s OK. I felt the same way when I first joined.” Natasha said.
“Really?” Carl looked into her deep purple eyes. Now he was close up they seemed even more endless
“Yeah. Everyone was training me really hard, and I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to help in the end. But here I am, not only am I a fully-fledged Freedom Fighter, but now I get to pass on my skills to you” Natasha smiled at him. “We all get scared of failing at some point in our lives. I was, and now you are… It’s just one of those things that will pass with time.”
“Natasha?”
“Yeah?”
“…Thanks”
“What for?”
“Telling me that… I feel a lot better now.” Carl said.
“That’s OK. We’d better get going or we will be late!”
“Oh yeah, we only have a few minutes left. We’d better go quick.”
“Let’s go.”
Natasha ran out of the room as Carl stood up. He stretched upwards and looked up. He saw a shadowy, female figure looking through the glass at him.
“WHO ARE YOU?” Carl shouted up at the figure, but she had gone.
“Was I seeing things?”
“Carl? What’s wrong?” Natasha had come back.
“Um…” Carl looked back up again. “It’s nothing. C’mon or we’ll be late.”
Natasha looked up too, before looking back at Carl and shaking her head.
“Oh, you want to be out there? Don’t worry, you’ll get some field training once you pass VR” She smiled at him before running off again. This time Carl followed her at top speed but still he couldn’t help wondering who the shadowy figure was.

Chapter 11 - Trouble In Training

Carl and Natasha raced along the corridors. Carl was surprised how fast she could run…
“Maybe her Battle Suit has enhanced abilities too?” Carl thought.
They got to the VR room just in time to see Katy.
“Hey, Katy!” Carl shouted as he screeched to a halt next to her.
“What’s up?” Katy asked
“Good luck” Carl smiled.
“You too,” Katy said as she walked into the next room.

Natasha stopped just beside him.
“You ready?” She asked him.
“As I’ll ever be I guess.” Carl said.
“What was that? You guess?” She smiled at him.
“I mean…Yeah, I’m ready.” Carl smiled back.
“That’s more like it” She said as she held open the door.

When Carl entered he saw all the other group members there. They were all crowded around Shadow.
“Um… Carl, could you wait outside for a moment. I just need to discuss how we are going to train you….”
“Er.. yeah, sure.” Carl said and he went outside.
Carl sat in the corridor underneath the skylight and looked upwards. Outside it was a glorious day, with a bright blue sky and small wispy clouds puffing their way across the sky.
Carl sighed happily
“You don’t see skies like that often at home.” He said to himself. “I think I’m going to like it here.”
He closed his eyes and sighed again.
He listened to all the sounds around him…none. There was not a sound to be heard. Usually at home it would be either his sisters shouting at him, or his mom yelling at him for one reason or another…
“So peaceful,” Carl thought.
The door swung open and Carl jumped.
“OK Carl, we are ready for you now.” Tails came out. “You OK?” He asked seeing Carl on the floor.
“I couldn’t be better Tails.” Carl smiled.

Carl walked back into the room. Rouge was over by the control panel and Shadow was next to the door leading into the VR Room.
“Carl what we intend to do is come into the VR simulation with you, rather than stay out here and tell you what to do. First of all, I shall help enhance your speed.” Shadow explained. “From there, you can take any path you want, be it Flight, Power or your special abilities.”
“OK Shadow, let’s get it started.”
“Alright then Carl, we will start training. Rouge, don’t forget. If something goes wrong you have to get Carl out as soon as you can.”
“Don’t worry Shadow; I know what I’m doing.”
“Good. Carl, let’s go” Shadow said indicating the door”

Carl walked through the door and Shadow followed close behind. He pushed the door closed and walked into the centre of the room.
“OK guys, this is the standard speed program.” Tails voice filled the room, “Good luck Carl.”

The grey walls and floor disappeared in an instant, to be replaced by a long stretch of road that extended beyond the horizon.
“This is simple Carl. In order for you to train in speed, you must go as fast as possible.” Shadow said, “It may seem obvious, but not all of the time. So off you go. I’ll keep watching you and helping you in any way I can.”

Carl started to run along the road, taking it slow at first but getting faster and faster until he was just a blue blur on the road.
“Alright then Carl, you have mastered going fast… but another thing is to stop fast. You must now stop in less than 3 seconds.”
Carl stopped dead and slowed right down to a stop, just inside 3 seconds.
“Well done Carl…” Shadow seemed impressed. “But now begins your real test.”
Just ahead of him, Carl saw a long white line across the road.
“You must now race me along this road to its end, 200 miles away… and win. Then you will have passed your speed training.”
“Alright then Shadow, let’s do this.”
Carl stood at the line and crouched down.
“Ready?” Shadow asked.
“Yeah, you bet I am.” Carl replied.
“Then GO!” Shadow said and blasted off.
Carl chased him and caught up with him.
“Hmph, you think that’s all I have?”
Shadow blasted off ahead again, but Carl not only caught up but he passed him and stayed there for over 50 miles, until Shadow finally caught up with him again.
“Excellent Carl, you have surpassed me in skill… but will you win this race?”
“Is my Battle Suit blue?” Carl asked him smiling.
Carl blasted over the crest of a hill and tore down it at lightning speed, with Shadow following close behind.
As they entered the final 50 miles, Shadow and Carl were neck and neck when Shadow suddenly fell over and skidded along the floor for several miles. Carl stopped dead.
“Whoa, Shadow….you ok?”
“Yes, and you have just passed your test. You have proved that it wasn’t important to win, but to help your friends… Tails end the program!”
The room returned to normal and Shadow left the room.
“OK Carl, who do you want to train with next?”
“OK, I think…Rouge; I could do with some power training.”
“Alright then” Rouge stepped down from the control panel and Natasha took her place. “Let’s go Carl”
Rouge entered the room first who stopped in the middle of the room and turned to face Carl.
“I hope you’re ready, this will be intensive training” Rouge said. “Natasha, load the program in now”
The room disappeared again and Carl and Rouge were stood inside a large caged arena.
“First off, activate your Metal Fists.” Rouge instructed
Carl pressed the button to activate the fists.
“Oh, that’s right. You don’t have the upgraded suit yet. Well, we’ll just have to work around that.”
Carl’s fists turned to metal and Carl clanged them together.
“Alright then, let’s see what you’ve got first, and we’ll go from there OK?”
A large thick wall appeared in front of Carl.
“You have to get as far though this wall as you can in one minute. GO!”
Carl attacked the wall viciously punching it at lightning speeds, considering the weight of his hands though, he wasn’t making much of an impact.
All too soon, the minute was up and Carl had made little damage to the wall.
“OK, I see one of your main problems. You are trying to be quick instead of powerful. Watch this.”
Rouge flew up a little way off the ground and started kicking the wall quickly. Just as Carl had, she made barely any damage.
“Now watch when I slow down and put more power behind my foot.”
Rouge kicked the wall hard, and sent a large chunk of it hurtling towards Carl, but he dodged it easily.
“Now you try” Rouge said as she landed next to Carl.
Carl pulled his fist back and slammed it into the wall and blasted a large piece out of it.
“Definitely better, but you need to work on it. But we’ll move on. We still have a lot to get through.”
Rouge pointed to her boots.
“Now you punch, and I kick, but Tails is working out some metal boots for you, so until then, I’ll have to give you some fighting tips instead of some training for now.”
“That’s OK.” Carl said.
“OK, the main tip is to have just one style, but make it vary a little. If you don’t make it vary, then your opponent will catch on and will have you down on the ground in no time. Another thing, always keep your guard up. You never know what may happen.”
“Got it.” Carl nodded.
“So, do you think you are ready to fight me?” Rouge asked.
“Let’s do it.” Carl said.
“OK then, first to pin the opponent for 5 seconds wins.”

Rouge flew at Carl and kicked him in the leg, taking him down, but Carl recovered quickly and charged at Rouge punching her, but Rouge was too fast and dodged it and slammed Carl in the back.
Carl yelled in pain as he hit the ground. Rouge lifted him a little way off the floor and kicked him back down again. A small trickle of blood emerged from Carl’s mouth.
“Is this all you have?” Rouge taunted
“N…No...” Carl tried to speak...but he had been winded badly.
Rouge charged at him again and grabbed his leg pinning it against the ground..
“1….2…..3” Rouge counted.
“Try Carl….you have to try….you can do this...” He thought.
“AAARRRRGGHHHH” Carl yelled as he threw Rouge off and stood back up. Rouge flew down to the ground.
“Oh, look who cam out to play.” Rouge taunted again.
Carl rushed at her and uppercutted Rouge and she flew higher into the air. She floated back down to the ground gently, but Carl charged again and punched her to the ground. He pinned her arms down and she struggled violently, but Carl’s grip was vice-like and Rouge wasn’t going anywhere.
“1….2….3….4….5… I win...” Carl breathed, before helping Rouge to her feet. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah…I’m fine…our injuries will disappear once we leave the training, seeing as they didn’t actually happen. But that was very well done. You managed to pin me down; however, pinning down your opponent will not win you any battles… you must prevent movement any way you can.”
“I got it…” Carl said
“Let’s go back then.”
The program ended and Carl stumbled through the door out into the control room.
“Rouge, what’s happening…?” Carl’s mouth was still bleeding.
“The regeneration must not be affecting you as quickly as it does us. Just sit down for a second and you should be fine.” She said as she wiped the blood from Carl’s mouth.
“Are you alright Carl?” Natasha asked.
“Not right now no…. I’m in so much pain…” Carl winced as Rouge put her hand on one of Carl’s reddened marks on his face.
“Sorry Carl.” Rouge said. “If I would have known your injuries wouldn’t go instantly…”
“It’s….OK….Rouge…” Carl said… “AHHHHH” he screamed making everyone jump.
“What is it Carl? Natasha said.
“I…don’t know…..sharp pain… my leg…”
Rouge took lifted up the bottom of the leg of Carl’s Battle Suit. Blood was dripping from a wound where bare bone was showing.
“Oh…no… Natasha, get Sonic quickly… this must’ve happened when I kicked you down.”
Natasha ran out of the room to fetch Sonic as Rouge leant over Carl.
“Don’t worry….about it…. I’ve gotta learn…to cope with….pain…right?” Carl managed a weak smile before screaming in pain again.
“What’s happened Carl?” Sonic said as he entered the room.
“He was in virtual training where Rouge managed to break his leg, but it hasn’t healed….we don’t know how long it will take for the regeneration to begin either…” Shadow said.
“Right, we need to get Carl down to the medical room as carefully as possible… Shadow?”
Shadow lifted Carl onto his shoulders.
“Shadow…what are you doing?”
“Getting Carl there safely…the only way I can… Chaos Control…”
“OK, Tails and I will meet you there as soon as we can… everyone else make sure Katy knows what is going on and get her down to the medical room as soon as she can. Alright…let’s move…”
“Carl, this will feel weird, but it’s normal…” Shadow said.
“Just go….Shadow….now….” Carl said… he was slowly turning white.
“Shadow GO!!! He’s losing a lot of blood!!!” Natasha screamed.
“CHAOS…..CONTROL!!!!” Shadow yelled and they both disappeared in a blaze of green light.

Chapter 12 - Not Gonna Let Him Die

Shadow reappeared inside the medical centre and lay Carl down on the nearest bed.
“Don’t worry Carl, everything’s gonna be all right…” Shadow assured him.
Seconds later Sonic, Tails and Rouge came in through the door.
“How is he?” Rouge asked.
“He could be better, he’s lost a lot of blood.” Shadow said gravely.
“Yeah, and until the regeneration process kicks in, the only thing we can do is try to stop the bleeding.” Sonic added.
“Good thing we stopped by my room on the way” Tails said “I managed to grab my DNA Sampler… now we’ll find out what is stopping the regeneration process from starting.”
Tails took out a small needle and moved closer to Carl’s bed.
“I know you’re in a lot of pain Carl, but this might hurt.”
Tails pushed the needle through his skin and withdrew a small amount of blood, which he then dripped onto a small machine.
“What…. is…it doing?” Carl asked breathlessly.
“I’m just analysing your DNA, there is a small section of your DNA that is stopping the regeneration from starting. AHA!” Tails exclaimed, “I’ve found it.”
“Where?” Sonic asked
“There” Tails pointed at a small section outlined in red. “That is slowing the regeneration process’ start which is why Carl’s leg hasn’t healed yet…”
“So how long until it starts?” Rouge asked.
“About an hour… we need to stop this bleeding now…or….” Sonic stopped… “we might lose him…” Sonic said quietly.
Rouge gasped quietly.
“All this because of me…” she said with a tear in her eye.
“R…Rouge….” Carl said… “You…c...can’t blame…. yourself…. You… didn’t know that….nnng…..that….this…would happen to…me…” It sounded as though Carl was in some intense pain.
Just then Natasha, Spyke and Katy arrived, closely followed by Amy and Knuckles.
“CARL!!” Katy screamed as she saw the blood seeing from under his Battle Suit…
“Spyke, get Katy out of here…please…” Sonic said.
“NO Sonic….I want to stay with Carl….” Katy said angrily.
“I’m sorry Katy, but we need to stop the bleeding or else….he could die….”
“What?….d….die?” Katy stammered.
Katy turned whiter than usual.
“Spyke, NOW… get her into the next room. We’ll come and get you once we’ve stopped this…” Shadow yelled.
“You’ve got it Shadow.” Spyke said. “C’mon Katy, it’ll be OK, they won’t let him die…”
“S…..Sonic…” Carl said… “I need to…. nnng….” Carl slumped back in his bed.
“TAILS!!! We need to do something now….” Sonic shouted.
“I got it.” Tails said.
He pushed some bandages onto Carl’s bleeding leg, being careful that he didn’t cause any more damage. He wrapped the bandage around as tightly as he could. The blood stopped flowing out of his leg…
“Nice job… right, I want only ONE person in here at a time to watch if the bleeding starts again…” Sonic said… “And I think that I…”
“I’ll do it…” Rouge said…. “It’s my fault he’s here in the first place…. It’s only right…”
“Alright then” Sonic said. “But we need to keep Katy as calm as possible… Natasha, I need you to go back up to Katy’s room with her and keep her company… I’ll be up as soon as I hear anything from Rouge…Go.”
“OK” Natasha ran from the room and moments later they heard her voice calming Katy down.
“It’ll be alright… I promise.”
“Alright, everyone else I don’t think we’ll be training for a while, so do anything you want unless Carl gets better soon… then we’ll recommence training.” Shadow said.

“Ugh…” Carl slowly came to. “What the…. What happened?”
“Carl?” Rouge’s face slowly swam into view. “Oh, Carl. You’re OK…”
“Rouge?” Carl said. “What’s happened?”
“We were training and I accidentally managed to break your leg… Carl… you almost died!”
“What?” Suddenly it all came back to him…the fight, the rush to get him to the medical centre… everything.
Rouge turned away.
“I’m so sorry Carl… I didn’t mean for any of this to happen to you…” Rouge said, looking down at her boots.
“Rouge, it’s ok… it was an accident…. Not exactly one that’s likely to happen to me at home, but I’m ok with it.” Carl smiled. “Nnng…” Carl winced again.
Rouge looked at him again “Are you all right?”
“Yeah… just a bit of a twinge…. But nothing else…” Carl smiled again.
He gently lifted up the bandages and looked at where the wound was…. It had completely vanished…
“It’s…. It’s… back to normal!” Carl said happily.
“I’ll go and tell the others, but stay off your leg… just in case.” Rouge said and she winked at him before she ran off to find the others…
Carl sighed heavily.
“Guess it is back to training after this.” He said to himself. “I can’t wait…. As long as nothing else happens….”
He looked up through the window and saw the same shadowy figure from before. She had long red hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a yellow suit, similar to a Battle Suit, but it wasn’t one.
“HEY, wait…. Who are you.” Carl shouted.
The figure winked at him before taking off…
“Who is she? And why the heck does she keep spying on me?” He said out loud.
“CARL!!!” Katy ran into the room and hugged him tightly… “You’re ok!!” She started crying tears of joy…
“Hey, hey…no need to get all emotional… jut a mere near death experience... Right Sonic?”
“Well actually they’re not exactly..”
He was briefly interrupted by Rouge discreetly treading on his foot.
“Yeah….Yeah, all part of being a Freedom Fighter.” He smiled weakly…
He then pulled Rouge aside.
“Why did you do that?” Sonic demanded.
“I think it wouldn’t exactly be in Carl’s best interests if we told him that he was the first one out of any of us to almost die Sonic… he’s already had a lot of things to take in today as it is! Let him rest for the rest of today…”She smiled a him…
“OK.” Sonic nodded. “Katy, I know you don’t want to leave Carl, but you still have some training to finish remember?”
“Oh, yeah…” Katy looked downhearted.
“Cheer up you!” Carl said encouragingly… “I’ll still be here when you get back.” He smiled at her.”
“Alright then, let’s go.” Katy leapt off the bed and walked out of the door.
“Natasha, Rouge. I’m counting on you to look after him. Shadow, Tails. You may as well help train Katy with us.”
“OK” Tails said before leaving the room with Shadow.
As soon as the others were out of the door Natasha and Rouge went over to Carl’s bed.
“You OK now Carl?” Natasha asked.
“Still a bit of a twinge, but I assume that’s because of the regeneration.” Carl smiled…
“Yeah…it is.” Rouge said, “The DNA in your body is rebuilding the bones and tissue you broke…”
“Your body should return back to normal soon, but I think it would be better if you stayed down here with us for now…. At least now you have someone to talk to…” Natasha smiled….
“Hey, I need to ask you two something.” Carl said.
“What is it?” Rouge said.
“Well, I’ve been seeing this figure spying in on me… she was a female echidna, and she wears a yellow Battle Suit type suit… and she has blue eyes and…”
“It can’t be….” Natasha said…
“Who?” Carl asked…now feeling a bit worried
“Hannah…..” Rouge nodded..

Chapter 13 - Who The Heck Is Hannah???

“Who is Hannah?” Carl asked
“Well, Hannah is the sort of person you don’t want to get onto the wrong side of…” Natasha explained. “She will hunt you down and kill you.”
“Either that or make you wish you were dead” Rouge added.
“OK” Carl said. “But what would she want with me.”
“Maybe she is after the information we need…Maybe she is working with Doctor Eggman!” Rouge said, shocked.
“But… if she has been watching me this whole time, why hasn’t she told Eggman where we are?” Carl was puzzled. It was a real mystery.
“No, she wouldn’t” Natasha shook her head “Then it would mean she has nothing to go for… or as she calls it, she won’t have any fun.” Natasha rolled her eyes slightly.
“So we have to get you trained faster than before… and we can’t tell Sonic, unless she makes a move…” Rouge looked down “If she makes a move on you, then it will all be over.”
“Alright then.” Carl got off the bed gently. “If I need training, then let’s go.”
“Carl, no.” Natasha said. “I’m not risking you damaging your leg again, just to help us.”
“I know, but if this Hannah gets her hands on me, then like you said…. It’s all over.”
Natasha sighed
“Alright then, but you hurt yourself and you can’t say we didn’t warn you…”
“Don’t worry. I think we’d better get back to work.” Carl smiled.
“I have a better idea.” Came a voice from the door. “You can come with me to my workshop and we’ll get you sorted out.” It was Tails. “Carl, I heard what you said and, well… I’m sure that if Sonic were standing here, he’d tell you that you were acting like a true Freedom Fighter, and I would agree with him. Injury or not, we need to get you organised with our new equipment. Follow me”
Tails led them to his workshop. It was filled with huge pieces of machinery and small attachments. In the centre of the room was a glass tube. Tails went over to a small control panel in the wall and started pressing buttons on it. The glass tube lifted up.
“Alright Carl, stand in the centre of the tube.”
Carl stepped up and stood under the centre.
“Watch out” He said as he lowered the tube back down around him.
“OK then. This machine will update all the internal systems of your suit and give it all the new abilities that Katy has… It will also give you your own VR Assistant.”
“Assistant?” Carl asked.
“Yeah, we programmed everyone’s data into this machine and the computer will pick the Freedom Fighters’ data who is best suited for you. The Assistant will then aid you in any way possible, and you will receive special training from the person you were given. The training will be with your new vehicle.”
“Vehicle?” Carls’ eyes lit up.
“I’ll explain the details later, but we need to sort this now.” Tails said urgently. “This will feel strange, but it’s completely normal”
An eerie blue light was shone into the tube and Carl was lifted a few feet into the air. He started to spin around slowly. As he did, small yellow lines appeared on his Battle Suit. They grew larger and they pulsed with energy. Carls visor grew longer so it covered both of his eyes. As it was lowered, Carl saw vast amounts of data being projected onto it.
“This is the entire contents of the Freedom Fighter database, including yours and Katy’s data.” Tails explained. “You can use it in any way you want to.”
“Awesome!” Carl exclaimed. “But this spinning is making me a bit weird…”
“It’s almost over…it’s now selecting your Assistant.”
The machine stopped and the tube raised up.
“OK Carl, step onto that platform over there and connect the two wires into the small holes in your Battle Suits right arm.”
“Carl did as instructed and the visor began reading the data.
“Tails…this feels weird.” Carl said. “It feels like something is inside my head.”
“Don’t worry, the machine is building up your Assistant data, and in a few seconds, we will have your assistant projected in front of you… but I won’t be able to see it. We are in no position to be poking into what your suit holds for you. But you will be able to communicate with your Assistant without talking, you simply use telekinesis.”
The machine beeped and in front of Carl was Natasha.
“What is she doing here?” Carl thought
“I guess we got along better than I first thought?” She said. “I am your VR Assistant.”
“Woah…” Carl said… “Tails, this is awesome!”
“Thanks” Tails smiled “Now unplug the wires and we will get you back for your vehicle training and weapons training with your VR Assistant. All you have to do is return to your room and tell your assistant to get who your assistant is…so for example, if your assistant is Sonic, tell your assistant to fetch Sonic, and Sonic will get a message in his head to know that he is needed. You can do it with any Freedom Fighter.”
“Cool…. Like a Codec…” Carl said.
“A what?” Tails asked, confused”
“Never mind Tails.” Carl said.
Carl smiled and shook his head slightly…
“So am I all set?” Carl asked eagerly
“Yep, go back to your room and call whoever your assistant is… everyone is waiting to see who it is, so you will be able to contact them right away… but remember, only two people must know who your assistant is… you, and the person who is your assistant.”
Carl nodded. “Got it”
“Oh, I just remembered, there is one more thing; did you bring your games simulator?”
Carl pulled it out of the slot on his Battle Suit.
“Haven’t left my room without it yet?” Carl smiled.
“OK, give it to me” Tails said.
“OK, why?” Carl enquired.
“You’ll see.” Tails winked at him.
He put it onto a small table and used a magnification device to see what he was doing. He fiddled around with it for a few moments before handing it back to Carl.
“There, now it has been updated with your assistants data, and also, as a bonus… now play any piece of music you can think of.”
“What would I do without you Tails?” Carl said and shook his hand.
“This means, that it won’t be me in your games any more…it will be your assistant. OK?”
“Got it… no problem.” Carl said before he walked back up to his room to try out his new gear.

Carl reached his room in no time and sat down on his bed…
“Natasha…. Can you fetch Natasha for me..”
“OK Carl…. I’m contacting her now…”
A few moments later Natasha appeared in his room.
“Carl, what’s wrong?” Natasha asked
“Nothing… I want to continue my training….seeing as you are my VR Assistant...” He smiled.
“I am?” Natasha smiled broadly. “That’s great. We’ll use your VR room to get started with your vehicle and special abilities training, and tomorrow we will go back to your usual training.”
“Alright then….let’s go for it.” Carl said… and they walked into the VR room and shut the door.

I dunno, I kinda liked Omochao, he was... Sorta funny...
Especially when I threw him at an enemy, shot him, chucked him off a cliff, drop him in front of a train...



Heh, yeah, I miss being able to enjoy pummeling the help option...

In Sonic Adventure 2, he was everywhere.
Now, he's nowhere...

Chapter 14 - Too Hot To Handle

“There has to be someway to get at him…but how?”
Hannah sat in her Ice Castle on the edge of Ice Ridge on a chair made completely out of ice. Lining the walls were large crystals of ice and small blue lights. In front of her was a large video monitor displaying Carl’s training videos.
“It must be…. Computer… stop video.”
“Acknowledged Hannah” Came the computers monotone voice.
“Zoom in on frame 37” Hannah commanded.
“Zooming in… 3 times magnification.”
“That’s got to be it.” Hannah said. “The Battle Suits must have enhanced abilities… that’s how he manages to move so fast. But how can I get my hands on one.”
Hannah stood up and began pacing around the room, deep in thought.
She then sat back down again.
“Computer, play video 7” Hannah said.
“Complying”
The screen showed the medical centre when Carl had been rushed in because of his leg.
“Computer, freeze video. Halve playback speed.”
The computer slowed down the video as Natasha entered the room.
“Her suit will do nicely.” She smirked. “Computer, analyse all data accumulated on subject ‘Natasha’.”
“No data is present on subject ‘Natasha’.” The computer said.
“Analyse all data on newcomers” Hannah demanded.
“All data accumulated. Displaying now.”
All the data appeared on Carl, Katy, Spyke and Natasha.
“Open data on subject 4”
“Acknowledged.”
The data files flew up and displayed all know data on Natasha…. There wasn’t much but it was enough to give Hannah what she needed.
“Excellent. Computer, plan attack strategy on subject 4”
“Displaying now Hannah.”
Three words appeared on screen.
Capture And Detain.
“Fantastic.” Hannah smiled evilly.
She left the room and came back wielding her blades.
“No one can escape me…” Hannah said, “Her suit shall be mine. Computer, full security lockdown in one minute.”
“Affirmative. Security countdown initialised. One minute to full defence mode.”
Hannah ran through several hallways and out into the misty daylight.
“You had better watch your back Natasha…. Hannah is coming for you.”
She took off into the pale daylight and disappeared from view.

Miles away, in the Freedom Fighter complex, Natasha begins to train Carl with special abilities.
“My special ability is to create fire.” Natasha explained, “So hopefully, by the end of the day, we will have you creating fire too.”
“OK,” Carl said, “So what do I have to do?”
“First of all, you need to think about what you want to create the fire into. So let’s start with something easy. Creating a few fireballs.”
“Alright!” Carl said.
Carl thought about the fireballs for a few moments.
“Once you have the image visualised you need to concentrate hard on where you want them to appear. For the sake of this, I will activate a VR Program, that consists of squares with numbers on them.” Natasha explained.
She went over to the corner and began typing into the computer on the wall.
A few seconds later, a numbered grid appeared on the floor. Carl was stood on Square 50.
“This ranges from 1 to 100,” Natasha said. “Just pick a numbered square, and we will continue.”
“Number 17” Carl said firmly, “Same as my age.”
“Alright” Natasha began typing again and Square 17 lit up. “Now generate the fireballs in that square.”
“How?” Carl said
“Focus on the fireballs again and think about where you want them to go to. Then thrust your arm in that direction, and they should generate.” Natasha told him.
“OK, let’s give it a shot.”
He concentrated and thrust his arm out. A small puff of smoke appeared and then faded away.
“That was good.” Natasha said “But you need to concentrate on the shape more.”
Carl tried again, concentrating harder. This time a small fireball appeared out of Carl’s hand and headed right for Natasha, who sidestepped around it.
“Better, but now you need to concentrate on the direction too.” Natasha said.
Carl concentrated harder than ever and managed to produce a large fireball and it soared across the field to Square 17.
“Excellent.” Natasha beamed, “But there is still some work to be done. Fireballs alone will not help you. Watch.”
The purple disappeared from her eyes, to be replaced by a fiery reddish orange colour.
“FIRE LANCE” She yelled.
A huge pillar of flames came crashing down on top of square 17 and scorched the field completely.
Carl stood there completely amazed at the sight, as Natasha returned to normal.
“See?” She smiled, “Carl? Are you OK?”
“That…was…the coolest thing EVER!” Carl said.
Natasha rubbed the back of her head and smiled.
“Thanks… Now you try something different, but I’ll leave it up to you what you want to create. Don’t forget, this is all about concentration.”
Carl focused hard… he was trying to think of something. Then he had it.
He concentrated hard and thrust his arm out.
“RAIN OF FIRE” He yelled, raising his arm to the sky.
Nothing happened.
“Nice try Carl but….” Natasha started… then she looked up. Hundreds of fireballs came crashing down onto Squares 1-49 and 51-100.
“Natasha…um… I’d get in here quickly…” Carl said calmly.
Natasha ran for square 50 and got there just in time to see where she had standing be engulfed in flames.
“Well…that…was… an experience.” Natasha said.
“Well, you said you would leave it to me.”
“OK, now visualise a different, less destructive force. Something you could use in battle.”
Carl visualised a sword.
“FIRE BLADE” He cried, and in his hands was a sword made from fire, except for the handle.
“Excellent, now fight me.” Natasha said.

Natasha leapt across the field and the fire returned to her eyes.
“FLAME CROSSBOW!” She called and a fiery crossbow appeared in her hands.
“Ready?” She shouted. Her voice seemed different… almost demonic.
“Let’s do it.” Carl said.
Natasha fired several fireballs at him from her bow and Carl blasted them all back with his blade.
“Think you are so tough eh?” Natasha said. “Dodge this! FLAME CANNON”
A huge fireball sped towards Carl…
“Ah…this could hurt,” Carl said. He thrust his arms out in front of him and said nothing, yet a wall of fire appeared in front of him.
Carl opened his eyes slowly.
“How the…?” He said.
“You are beginning to master these techniques very well.” Natasha said. “But you must defeat me in order to continue training.”
Natasha started running towards him and blasted him with several fiery arrows. Carl quickly dodged them all and slashed Natasha with his blade, causing her Battle Suit to tear a bit.
“That would have been a fatal blow, had this have not been virtual.” Natasha smiled. “Congratulations. You have passed.”
“I did?” Carl said… “Wow…that was fast…”
“You seem to pick things up really quickly.” Natasha said, sitting down on the floor. She patted the floor next to her, to signal that she wanted to talk. He went and sat down next to her.
“Are you alright?” Carl asked looking at the rip in her Battle Suit, and then back to her eyes, which had returned to their beautiful purple colour.
“It’s fine, it should repair itself when we leave the VR Program.” She explained. “What about you?”
“I feel fine, but a little drained.” He said. “But I guess that’s because this is the first time I have done that.”
“Yes.” Natasha said, “As you get used to it, you will feel less drained.”
They sat in silence for a few moments.
“You ready?” Natasha asked.
“Yeah… let’s go.” Carl said.
Natasha got up and walked over to the computer. She typed for a few moments and the program ended; the room returned to normal.
As they walked out they closed the door behind them... but they hadn’t noticed Hannah looking in from above.
“Soon you will be mine Natasha, and soon after… so will your little friend.” She said to herself before taking off over the complex.
